ANDRES VARGAS GÓMEZ THANKS AMBROSE IN THE MIAMI HERALD (SPANISH)

Andrew Vargas Gomez is the grandson of General Andres Varagas Gomez, the “George Washington” of Cuba who, along with Jose Marti, liberated Cuba from Spanish colonization.

After Castro’s revolution, Andres fled for his life to Miami, Florida. He was one of the principal organizers of the Bay of Pigs, and was captured during the invasion of Cuba. While all the other counter-revolutionary, prisoners were returned to Miami after about one year in captivity, Andres—who was a hugely popular in Cuba who preferred democracy—was kept in Castro’s prison for 22 years, to be made an example to those who would threaten his regime.

After he was freed, he returned to Miami, Florida, and was considered by the exile community the president of Cuba in exile. He and Ambrose formed the human rights organization “Guantanamo No”, for the purpose of liberating the 33,000 Cuban Balseros (rafters) held in concentration like camps at Guantanamo Bay, after being interdicted by the U.S. Coastguard during the Clinton administration.
